Are you new to the world of Gundam plastic model kits and feeling overwhelmed by the various grades available? Don't worry, you're not alone. Understanding the differences between the various grades can be confusing, especially for those who are just starting out. This guide is here to help you navigate the different Gundam grades, from the entry-level First Grade to the high-end Perfect Grade. With this knowledge, you'll be able to choose the perfect grade for your skill level, budget, and personal preference.
High Grade (HG)
Bandai's most common type of kit - High Grade. Typically in 1/144 scale (Usually around 13 cm tall). Rarely feature inner frames and potential for panel lining is there but limited. Most of these have polycaps (soft plastic) for joints so articulation is decent but due the smaller size and fewer parts, is limited. HG kits are separated out into different lines by their respective series. While they may lack in detail and articulation compared to other grades, they are perfect for beginners and those on a budget.

Real Grade (RG)
A newer line created by Bandai which features 1/144 scale kits the same as HG but in much higher detail. These kits are usually around twice the price but this is reflected by the quality. They have detail comparable to MG kits and have inner frames. New printing technology is used throughout these kits allowing parts to be molded in more than one color.

No Grade (NG)
No Grade kits can refer to older kits that were manufactured before Bandai's grading system was introduced or newer kits that have limited articulation or colour.
No Grade kits omit major joints, opting instead to only allow critical pieces to move—typically the neck, hips, shoulders, and feet. They come in many different scales and have very low articulation and detail. Some require glue and paint but others are snap fit and molded in color. This grade is essentially for anything that doesn’t fit into an existing grade. Recent NG kits are often on par or better than HG kits. A kit that does not have their grade listed is considered a No Grade. They're very cheap and are usually perfect for those wanting to build a large army and don't mind the lack of detail or articulation.
First Grade (FG)
Similar to No Grade, First Grade kits feature simple detail and articulation. They require minimal assembly and do not need any special tools or skills to put together. They usually come molded in one or two colors, with no stickers or decals, which means that they require painting to look their best.
Reborn-One Hundred (RE/100)
The Reborn-One Hundred (RG 1/100) is a Gundam model kit line produced by Bandai, which was first introduced in 2014. The Reborn-One Hundred line is known for its large size and high level of detail, making it a popular choice among Gundam model kit collectors and enthusiasts.
Unlike other grades, the Reborn-One Hundred line features a mix of classic and modern design elements, with a focus on upgrading the details and overall appearance of classic Gundam models. The Reborn-One Hundred kits come with a higher number of parts, better articulation, and greater flexibility in posing compared to lower grades like HG, making them a more challenging build and a more impressive final product.
Full Mechanics (FM)
Full Mechanics (FM) is a line of Gunpla models produced by Bandai that was introduced in 2015. These models are similar to the MG line in terms of scale, but detail levels are somewhere in between HG and MG. FM kits typically have fewer parts and are easier to assemble than MG or PG models, making them a good choice for builders who want to tackle a more advanced kit without spending as much time or money.
FM kits are based on mobile suits from various Gundam series and typically come with a variety of accessories, such as weapons, shields, and effect parts. Some FM kits also feature interchangeable parts, allowing builders to create different versions of the same mobile suit. FM models are generally priced between HG and MG models, making them an affordable option for intermediate-level builders.
Master Grade (MG)
Typically in 1/100 scale (Usually around 18 cm tall). Often features an inner frame and has many points of articulation. Many master grades also include a cockpit with a hatch that opens and unpainted figures of the pilot/s (1 seated, 1 standing). These kits are molded in many different colors and look excellent even without paint. MGs often have many fiddly parts and can take a long time to build. Having some experience is recommended before building an MG kit. MGs are generally more than twice the price of HG kits as many more gimmicks are included as well as been much bigger.

Master Grade EXTREME (MGEX)
This is a relatively new line of Gunpla that was first introduced in 2020. These models are similar to Master Grade kits but come with additional features and enhancements, such as LED lighting and improved articulation. They also feature more intricate designs and details, making them a popular choice for experienced Gunpla builders looking for a challenge.
Perfect Grade (PG)
Bandai’s flagship kits. The Perfect Grade series is the most advanced and expensive grade of Gundam models, featuring the highest level of detail, complexity, and articulation. They are usually 1/60 scale and come with a wide range of features such as light-up parts, intricate inner frames, and realistic mechanical details. They require a high level of skill and patience to assemble and are recommended for experienced modelers.

Mega-Sized (MS)
Mega-Size Gundam, also known as MS Gundam or 1/48 Gundam, is a line of Gundam models that are larger than most other Gunpla kits. They are roughly 37.5cm tall, making them around three times larger than a typical Master Grade model. This larger size allows for more intricate details and greater articulation, making them popular among serious collectors and hobbyists.
Super Deformed (SD)
SD Gundam, short for "Super Deformed Gundam," is a line of Gundam models that are characterized by their cartoonish, chibi-like appearance. These models are usually smaller and less detailed than their High Grade counterparts, but they make up for it with their unique and cute design. SD Gundam kits are often beginner-friendly and are a great way to introduce newcomers to the world of Gundam models.
The SD Gundam line is further divided into several sub-lines, including the SD Gundam BB Senshi line, which features even more exaggerated and stylized designs, and the SD Gundam EX-Standard line, which is a newer line that aims to provide more detail and articulation while still retaining the super deformed aesthetic.
